I believe every single person has the ability to enact change. As a nurse, we must all use our strengths and our passion to make each day better for those in our care. A practical nurse must work with the client and their family as well as the health care team to ensure the client's needs are met. In a recent study following emotional comfort in hospital patients, interviewed clients reported "a state of relaxation that resulted from therapeutic interactions.... Personal control over the situation contributed to emotional comfort" (Williams and Irurita, 2006). I believe it is necessary to acknowledge each client as an individual and to focus your work on their needs, The "trust and respect" that will be earned will "result in improved client care" (Potter & Perry, 2009, p. 38).
By following the established Standards of Practice, a practical nurse can help to ensure that safe and uniform care, proven by the most "recent and clinical evidence" (Potter & Perry, 2009, p. 37), is provided to each and every client across the province.
Potter & Perry (2009) wrote "Ethical nursing care means promoting the values of client well-being, respecting client choice, assuring privacy and confidentiality, respecting sanctity and quality of life, maintaining commitments, respecting truthfulness... acting with integrity, honesty, and professionalism in all dealings with the client and other health team members." (p.38)
